Everyday, our skin is exposed to the sun and to the environment, which can cause dryness, irritation and even premature aging. But help is at hand; your skincare routine can help combat this. The Protect step is all about how to help boost the barrier of your skin, your skin’s natural function to protect itself from sun exposure, moisture loss and irritants. Read on to discover some of Caroline’s expert advice:
• Skin needs protecting from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the reason your skin tans, when you’ve been out in the sun. UVB rays are the main reason your skin gets burned as the rays damage the top layers of the skin. Both UVA and UVB rays play a role in skin ageing and overtime, the development of skin cancer. To protect your skin, use a moisturiser which has SPF. The SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, delays the length of time it takes for the UV rays to redden and damage skin. When you're choosing an SPF moisturiser make sure it covers UVA and UVB rays to offer you all round protection.
• Find the moisturiser that’s right for you. If you are an outdoors person it is a good idea to invest in an SPF moisturiser.
• You don’t need to use much of your moisturiser- about the size of an almond. A top tip is to also think about applying it to your neck and chest as these areas can show the first signs of ageing too.
• Massage your moisturiser into your hands first and use upward, outward movements to apply it onto your skin. Use gentle upward movement so that you don’t risk putting pressure on skin and pulling it down.
